The very title of Address Unknown sums up the dramatic story of the film. The homeless, vagrants, those with no known address. Return to sender: but what can you hope to receive if you do not exist? This is the status of millions of people throughout the world who are destined to receive nothing but suffering and affliction. The film was shot in Rome, where there are more than 10,000 homeless people and 2,000 vagrants. But the statistics are not the point: Rome is merely a symbol for a more general discussion of the process of liberalist globalisation that is literally ruining the existence of millions of human beings. The tragic images of the people and refuse churned out by a major Western city point to a larger and more pressing problem.
