The Norwegian national curriculum for English studies has inter-cultural dialogue as one of its objectives. It states:
Learning about the English-speaking world will provide a good basis for understanding the world around us. English studies give insight into the way we live and how others live, and their views on life, values and cultures. This promotes greater interaction, understanding and respect between people with different cultural backgrounds.
In the English class we used the film Wondrous Oblivion to learn about a multi-cultural Britain. We saw how immigrants might struggle to gain acceptance. Many people in Norway face some of the same challenges, so we decides to explore what it means to be Norwegian and how a newcomer might fit in.
